Kelly G. Shaver, Founding Director

Kelly G. Shaver is Professor Emeritus from the College of Charleston and the founder of MindCette, LLC. Trained as an experimental social psychologist, he is an expert on the social cognitive processes that support entrepreneurial persistence. His work has been supported by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Science Foundation. A Fellow of three scientific societies – the Association for Psychological Science (APS), the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP), and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) – he is the winner of several research awards including the College of Charleston’s Distinguished Research Award (2016), the GEN Global Compass Award for Research Champions (2018), and the Max S. Wortman Award for Lifetime Achievement in Entrepreneurship from USASBE (2019).

Kelly is past Chair of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management, past Associate Editor of the Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and past Editor of Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice. He is the author of numerous research articles and seven books, the latest of which is Psychological Foundations of the Entrepreneurial Mindset (2024). Kelly is a faculty representative to the Federal Demonstration Partnership and is a member of the VentureSouth angel investment group. He is also a Master Judge in the South Carolina Barbecue Association.

The National Science Foundation has announced a $67 million investment to create the SECURE Center ($50 million to the University of Washington and $17 million to Texas A&M). The work led by the UW, with the collaboration of eight other institutions of higher education, will develop best practices for ensuring the integrity and security of the entire U.S. research ecosystem. As a subcontractor to the UW, MindCette is proud to shoulder the full responsibility for ensuring that the voices of small businesses will be represented in the work of the SECURE Center.
